Dexter Jackson Wins the Olympia.
In case you haven't heard, Dexter Jackson won the Mr. Olympia title and there was a stunned hush throughout the land.
Followed by wild applause.
The stunning news was that Jay Cutler (the defending champion) showed up to his second Mr. Olympia in a row in less than stellar shape, leaving some to wonder if his best days of competing are behind him. His soft appearance at the Friday pre-judging left the judges with no choice but to select Jackson as a winner, lest they risk losing all credibility with the fan base.
In the end however the judges got it right, an oddity for the show, and there's a remarkably small amount of carping about the results in opposition to prior years.
If, like me, you are looking forward to next years' competitive season with anticipation instead of dread it could be because there's been a glimmer of hope in the judging this year, where the best physique has been rewarded with placings instead of the usual political decisions.
Good job to AMI and the IFBB for putting on a good show.

As reported today in New Scientist and elsewhere, the same basic principles used in recent experiments to render objects invisible at least in some parts of the electromagnetic spectrum have been employed to develop a dike system that can shield objects they surround from water waves.

Surely an ideas competition must be held so as to generate other possible programmes.
In any case, it's probably something Peter Eisenman would design if hired by the Army Corps of Engineers.

They are not merely out to elect Democrats, but to also permanently realign U.S. politics and shift our society and culture in a far-left wing direction.

How To Spin a Debate!
I plan to discuss the presidential debate in more detail later (hint: McCain knocked it out of the park!). However, since I really enjoyed reading (and laughing!) about the very first blog post reaction to the debate that I chose to click on this morning (over at Newsbusters), I thought that I would encourage everyone here to go over and read it!
Reading New Republic Teas Leaves Determine Debate Winner
The last paragraph made me laugh out loud! I could not believe that any serious journalist would ever write such a stupid title!! Someone needs to point that writer in the direction of the Fox News Channel's text message poll. As of last night, the "who won the debate" question results were:
McCain - 82%
Obama - 16%
Undecided - 1%
Last I heard, over 56 thousand people participated in that text message poll!
Over at CNN, they utilized their typical spin mantra to make one believe that Obama had a slight lead over McCain in the "who won" telephone poll they had conducted. Even one of the persons in their "after the debate" panel admitted that they had polled mostly Democrats and would have to see the national results that will be broadcast the next day. Ha!
The MSM spin is so laughable when it comes to their Obamabot mindset. It is like their brains have all been deprogrammed, then attached and assimilated by pseudo-humanoid drones like the Borg!

I had to laugh after listening to Harry Reid at the news conference this morning. First, he starts out by saying that this shouldn't be a presidential political issue. Then, in his next breath he not so subtly and hypocritically blames McCain for coming to town - claiming that he was responsible for ruining the progress on a potential bill.
Well people - that is a boldfaced lie and total bull****.
But Reid gets away with it anyway! How despicable.
And...he also tried to give Obama credit for what was previously agreed upon! How ludicrous is that??
At least Fox News reported the truth that the disagreements between the committee and the House Republicans were there even before the meeting with President Bush occurred.
Harry - you are such a liar! I won't hold my breath for a retraction.
Want to know the truth about why an agreement isn't forthcoming as quickly as it could?

Why indeed!
Who wants ACORN in there? The nutty socialists! (Ha! Couldn't resist the pun). It is mostly the Dems that are OK with this. Via del.icio.us/bldgblog, we discovered the above photo from the National Maritime Museum. In the foreground, you see a group of bathing machines en route to the waters off of Scarborough, Yorkshire.
A common sight in beach resorts in the 19th century, bathing machines allowed women to change their clothes in private, reach the waters without parading through open stretches of beach in their bathing suits, and then frolic about in relative privacy and without violating contemporary notions of modesty. Queen Victoria certainly had one, and like it, these caravans of propriety, of social mores too foreign for our own eyes, were simple wooden structures. Lest they invite voyeurs, they were built without windows, otherwise there were little ones inaccessible to prying eyes. Some were made of canvas and still others were very luxurious affairs, but all of them were on wheels, pulled in and out of the surf by horses or brute human power.
Perhaps there's something to be learned from this outmoded sea-side etiquette. Instead of building a palatial beach house with five bathrooms that will only be used as a summer retreat, you build something more modest, say, a tiny house — on wheels.
When the next Category 5 hurricane eyes your neck of the woods, it, of course, retreats to safer harbors. You don't even have to ask tax payers to bail you out after damaging winds and storm surges have deconstructed your Martha Stewart Living centerfold into driftwood and then ask/beg/litigate again to pay the federal flood insurance of your replacement colossus designed by Toll Brothers. Considering the current economic climate, there probably wouldn't be enough federal money left that can be earmarked for beach fortification that only benefits you, who, in turn, probably couldn't afford a rarely inhabited second home.

In any case, part of the label of the photo reads: “Scarborough made the headlines in 1993 after a landslide caused the Holbeck Hall hotel to fall into the sea.” Holbeck Hall should have been on wheels, too.

Obama, after Chris Dodd, was the biggest recipient of donations from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and his economic adviser, Franklin Raines, was a major architect of the financial disaster. So, too, was Jim Johnson, who (briefly) headed Obama’s V-P search team. McCain is exploiting this.
But a key point to bring out how many millions (tens of millions?) Obama has received from financial firms, not only Fannie and Freddie, but also Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and many, many other firms whose hands are dirty in the recent financial events. Goldman Sachs has treated Obama like the world’s most expensive mistress.
Bloggers and other onliners: We need to concentrate on issues that will ring a bell with the American people and avoid ones that mainly academic exercises. The fact that Obama has received millions from people who caused the economic crisis will resonate.
What is especially enraging for me is that Soros and his boy Obama may damn well succeed in pulling this country down. I have been writing about Soros for a long time and I am relieved to see others recognizing his nefarious machinations in this election.

OBAMA IS OWNED BY GEORGE SOROS
Barack Obama is a wholly-owned subsidiary of madman financier George Soros, the shadowy multi-billionaire who is credited with destroying the entire economy of Britain a few years ago while making a fortune betting against the British currency. For his trouble, he was convicted of insider trading, stock manipulation, and trading fraud. Sound familiar?
Now Soros, along with a conspiracy of Asian and European currency traders, is betting against the dollar. He hopes to bring down the economy of the United States and control the White House, all within the next eight weeks. Already there is talk in international financial circles of lowering the credit rating of the United States from AAA, for the first time in history. That would skyrocket our cost of borrowing. Soros is quoted as having said, “The main obstacle to a stable and just world order is the United States. . . . We must puncture the bubble of American supremacy.”
But first he must get Obama elected at all costs. And to that end he has managed to enlist many of the nation’s union bosses to commit more than $1 billion to the election. Soros plans a one-two punch against our economy, the first in New York in October (did we already see it?) the other in Hollywood just before the election in November.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that's worth keeping in mind while Democrats point fingers between now and Nov. 4: Senator John McCain was one of the three cosponsors of S.190, the bill that would have averted this mess.

It turns out the Senate is in the process of passing (or have passed) a new bill that helps parents in the life changing diagnosis of having a child with a disability. The bill ensures that they will receive the best prenatal and postnatal care; they will also be connected with the necessary emotional, physical, and social supports needed to raise someone with a disability.

Does the Mr. Olympia still matter to the Health and Fitness Industry?
This weekend, juiced up, oiled up, sexed up, pumped up bodybuilders will descend on Las Vegas for the 2008 Olympia Weekend as the 800lb Gorilla of bodybuilding organizations, The International Federation of Bodybuilders settles in to name its pre-determined champions in all of its contested divisions.
Maybe the worst kept secret in the industry is that bodybuilding is not now, nor has it been for some time, a legitimite competition. So rigged is the judging that Vegas won't even run betting lines on a competition being held in its own back yard. The casino's roll up their carpets (for fear of getting them stained) and only the Spearmint Rhino does any gussying up for the penultament event on the bodybuilding calendar. Absent any drama in the competition, the bodybuilding industry tries to invent drama by creating controversy that doesn't exist or by making one's selves a spectacle.
Yes, the bodybuilding industry is bereft of many of the principles that made it relevent in the past, creating the physical culture, comraderie, adherance to a healthful lifestyle. Those tenets are gone only to be replaced with false "gangsta" bravado, disposable female models willing to shoot nude (and have sex) at the drop of a hat to 'further their career', a chemical lifestyle, and a 'bunker down' mentality that places their thought processes outside of normal society. In short, its full of insecure men and pathetic women convincing themselves that they are somehow 'pretty' or 'manly' because of their ability to drop trou or their isolation. Bodybuilding men have convinced themselves that they really are modern-day equivilents of the gladiators of old. Bodybuilding women have convinced themselves that they are Amazons placed somewhere higher than males.
The sad thing is, they HAVE to convince themselves of this fact in order to make up for the fact that none of it really matters any longer.
At one time, bodybuilding training techniques were the most advanced in the industry. Football players and other athletes could use these cutting-age techniques and apply them to their sport. Today's bodybuilder is a luddite in the world of high-tech training. Yes, lifting weights is still the foundation, but the anciliary workouts that bodybuilders often ignore have progressed leaps and bounds past the archaic relics that bodybuilders adhere to. Nutrition and supplementation have progressed as well, leaving bodybuilding and its practionioners sucking the dust of an industry that's moving past the marketing of flavored powdered sugar, and into the realm of fresh whole organic foods supplemented with a few basic necessities for muscle growth and good health.
If you're still training and eating like a bodybuilder, you're at least 5-10 years behind the times.
Las Vegas is going to play host to a dinosaur's convention this weekend, sadly all of the attendees will be too self-absorbed to realize they are obsolete.

Life Begins At Conception
Received a comment on a thread from last month which argued about whether or not certain verses I had shared (regarding the biblical view that life begins at the moment of conception) were appropriately used for that view.

The facts on abortion are so clear, and the case against it so strong, that the pro-death crowd has to resort to twisted thinking, convoluted reasoning, and dodgy morality to try to make its case. But baby killing is still baby killing, no matter how it is dressed up or re-packaged.
Glacier-Sailing with the Katabatic Winds
Last month, we read on Der Spiegel about a German researcher who was conducting an experiment into slowing or stopping altogether the melting of Alpine glaciers.
Geographer Hans-Joachim Fuchs in the western German city Mainz has another idea. He wants to harness the power of cold mountain winds — so-called kabatic [sic] winds, or streams of cold, dense air that flow downhill — with windscreens. The screens would keep the cool air on top of the glaciers, perhaps preserving them for a little while longer.
For some reasons — maybe because our attention was somewhere else, i.e., too many RSS feeds, too little brain cells — we thought Fuchs was using the windscreens as though they were sails, to catch the winds to thrust the glaciers away from the higher temperatures of lower elevations. Curioser, we began wondering if they could also work on the ice caps of Greenland and Antarctica, where they will slow their march towards the sea. Or vice versa, if you want your glaciers to melt faster so you can increase your habitable territory, make oil exploration easier, and want to sell freshwater at exorbitant prices to water-parched countries.
Our full cognitive abilities did eventually return, but frankly, we should have just continued on misreading the article, because the real experiment is as absurd and farfetched as our own speculations.
“Something like that would certainly not be very effective,” says one glaciologist about Fuchs' idea.
“Even if you built a wind screen big enough, it's doubtful whether you could meaningfully alter the wind patterns,” says another glaciologist.
Fuchs is not a glaciologist.
Perhaps Fuchs and all the others should just forget about solving the local effects of climate change and directly combat global warming head on. Attack the virus, not the symptoms.
So for instance, Fuchs can re-conceptualize his windscreens as a source of sustainable energy. To do this, he may want to collaborate with Sheila Kennedy and his durable plastic curtains gets replaced with her photovoltaic curtains.
There isn't enough sun in the Alps, you say, not to mention Kennedy's electrified fabric probably isn't scalable from domestic use to industrial use?
In that case, forget the solar textiles; use piezoelectric curtains to harvest wind energy. Array them on the the sides of mountains and along the valleys to create katabatic tunnels and magnify the force and duration of the winds.
Meanwhile, with the snows gone and vegetation not yet well-established, rockslides will be more frequent. Solution: collaborate with Cemagref, the world leading institution in avalanche science. Ask them to engineer your mega-clothesline to act like a deflection or catchment dam when disasters strike. You will definitely need some anti-landslide protection, because developers would be lulled into a false sense of security and build where they shouldn't.
And if these anti-avalance protections aren't enough, you could always apply certain types of bacterium known to hold post-glacial soil together like cement.
You still say they won't generate enough electricity to make a difference, even if all of Europe's soon-to-be iceless mountains are curtained? Very well. Forget Europe.
Let's head to Nepal, Tibet, Peru, Bolivia, Eritrea and elsewhere cut off from the grid, where a now less extensive installation may not be enough to power the microwave and the washing machine and the space heater and the television and all the lightbulbs in the house at once but they will provide enough electricity to power the public water pump, the medical instruments in the clinic, the low-kilowatt fixtures in the school, and home radios.
Collaborate with FogQuest, and they could be turned into fog water collectors as well.

I took another Friday off; I guess I haven't been up to writing much lately. I don't know if I ever can put into words the amount of adjustment moving to another state takes. After all, it's been almost 2 months and I'm still feeling some of the effects. But the least I have a vacation to look forward to next week. That's right, my family and I are heading to the beach and finally taking a vacation- the first of which since we moved. Anyway, that's the reason there will not be any posts for next week.

I thought I would share with you. Despite my short analysis, it looks like a comprehensive website that explores all aspects of the diagnosis and treatment.

Trust, But Verify
When I heard that Presidential Candidate, Senator John McCain, recommended a bipartisan oversight committee for the 700 billion bailout measure, I was certainly relieved! It is an excellent idea. Just as he said in his town hall meeting speech in Scranton, Pa. this morning, "No one person should have access to such a huge amount of taxpayer money!" I wholeheartedly agree!
Admittedly, I do not know much about Treasury Secretary Paulson; except that he is a former CEO of Goldman. I need to do a search on him. However, just as McCain had mentioned several times since this investment meltdown came to fruition, it is best to "trust, but verify" any person who would be in a position like Paulson inevitably will - with access to so much tax-payer money in the face of this bailout measure.
After doing a quick search, I found this article quite interesting. In truth, I hate to link to it because the author obviously hates Bush, Republicans, and conservatives.
Although the author refers to people like me and Michele Malkin as "right-wing" it appears that he is glad that there is some conservative concern and chatter in opposition to Paulson getting access to so much money. Since one man would be making all of the decisions (at this point)as to what he will do with the money over the next two years, it makes perfect sense to be highly concerned.
All the more reason that John McCain's idea of a bipartisan oversight committee is crucial before the measure gets passed and signed by President Bush.
I still have a sneaking suspicion that George Soros has his grubby, evil and menacing hands somewhere in this mess. Can't prove anything, but my previous post about him (in case you missed it) reveals why I think he has something to do with our current financial crisis.
Not many people wrote comments to that post. Maybe I'm the only one who sees connecting dots between this crisis, the "Obama Unmasked" book, and O'Reilly's warnings about Soros in "Culture Warrior?"

Granted - some are certainly easier to spot than others.
Fox News Channel's Julie Banderas, just had quite an alarming telephone interview with Tony Alamo - whose compound was raided on Saturday by hundreds of federal and state authorities on the suspicion of child sexual abuse (including illegal polygamy with under aged girls) and child pornography.
The phone interview exchange between Banderas and Alamo isn't up at the site yet. Perhaps it will be in the future. When it's up, I will post a link to it.

THIS HOLDS TRUE - ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A CHRISTIAN!!

Years ago, I wrote an op-ed piece and submitted it to our local newspaper about the fact that abortion is the murder of unborn children. It was rejected twice. The third time I submitted it, there must have been a different publisher in charge that day because it was finally published. Here is a copy of the article:
ABORTIONS HAVE SIMPLY GOT TO STOP
Abortion survivor Gianna Jessen, now 25 years old [Note: she is now 31 years old], was aborted but did not die. Her mother was 7 months pregnant when Planned Parenthood in Southern California advised her to have a late-term abortion by having a solution of saline injected into the mother's womb. It burns the baby inside and out and the mother delivers a dead baby within 24 hours.
Gianna remained in such a solution for 18 hours and was delivered alive on April 6, 1977, at an abortion clinic. There were young women in the room who had already been given their injections and were waiting to deliver dead babies. When they saw Gianna, they experienced the horror of murder. Due to lack of oxygen supply during the abortion, Gianna lives with cerebral palsy.
Gianna appeared before Congress in support of the Born Alive Infants Protection Act of 2000 and said, "When the freedoms of one group of helpless citizens are infringed upon, such as the unborn, the newborn, and disabled and so-called 'imperfect,' what we do not realize is that our freedoms as a nation and individuals are in great peril. A murderous spirit will stop at nothing until it has devoured a nation."
The Protection Act was passed overwhelmingly, with 370 votes, but 15 congress people voted against it. These 15 people apparently believe that children born as a result of botched abortions should be allowed to suffer pain for three to seven hours and left to die a miserable death for lack of medical care because they were earmarked for termination.
Are some American people so cold-hearted they do not find this abhorrent?
Fox News analyst Bill O'Reilly exposed the identity of the 15 people on his show and was appalled that anyone could vote against such a bill. O'Reilly's guest was Jill Stanek, a nurse who testified before the Senate and said, "Abortion is a cancer that is literally killing America. It is killing our children while it is killing our consciences. It began when we took God out of our decision-making and proclaimed that the little beings growing inside of women were 'products of conception' and not children. Who should be surprised that we keep pushing the envelope so that now we are aborting these products of conception alive?"
Does a woman who seeks an abortion have the right to a dead baby, no matter what? The National Abortion Rights League thinks so. This demonstrates the abortion-rights lobby's infanticide agenda. They called the Infants Protection Act bill an "anti-choice assault." Given their mission, we can see why. If a baby born alive moments after an attempted abortion has a right to life, why did it lack such a right moments before? And a week before that? A month?
More than 27 years ago the pro-life movement predicted that the tragic Roe vs. Wade decision would promote a horrific culture of death and lead to groups that approve of baby killing. We have a Supreme Court majority that voted to allow abortionists to deliver an unborn child's body until only the head remains inside of the mother, puncture the back of the child's skull with scissors, and suck the child's brains out before completing the delivery of a dead baby. Professors like Princeton's Peter Singer and groups like NARAL deny that we are created equal and affirm a frightening concept which makes me shudder: that of a class of human being, including newborn infants, who are in effect non-persons and should be left to die after a botched abortion.
George F. Will said it well when he stated in Newsweek, "The tenet is that it is arbitrary, and morally and philosophically problematic, to say that a baby has no intrinsic dignity, and that its claim to respect for its life is contingent on its physical location or on whether it suits the convenience of anyone else. That tenet should, but does not, trouble (pro-abortion advocates or) the Supreme Court majority."

“A new approach to management of the American shoreline is urgently needed”
Another passage from Against the Tides; we just can't help ourselves.
Here, Cordelia Dean is actually quoting the conclusions of a report written in 1981 by a group of coastal geologists and signed off by many more experts in the same field of study. Their intent was to convince local, state and federal policy makers to restrict development on American beaches. Nobody listened. Considering recent meteorological events, perhaps government officials may want to buy them lunch and do some coastal policy pow-wow.
1. People are directly responsible for the “erosion problem” by constructing buildings near the beach. For practical purposes, there is no erosion problem where there are no buildings or farms.
2. Fixed shoreline structures (breakwaters, groins, seawalls, etc.) can be successful in prolonging the life of beach buildings. However, they almost always accelerate the natural rate of beach erosion...in the immediate vicinity of structures or...along adjacent shorelines sometimes miles away.
3. Most shoreline stabilization projects protect property, not beaches. The protected property belongs to a few individuals relative to the number of Americans who use beaches. If left alone, beaches will always be present, even if they are moving landward.
4. The cost of saving beach property by stabilization is very high. Often it is greater than the value of the property to be saved especially if long range costs are considered.
5. Shoreline stabilization in the long run (10 to 100 years) usually results in severe degradation or total loss of valuable natural resource, the open ocean beach.
6. Historical data show that shoreline stabilization is irreversible. Once a beach has been stabilized, it will almost remain in a stabilized state of increasing cost to the taxpayer.

POSTSCRIPT #1: In searching for an image to accompany this post, we stumbled accidentally into this article from All Headline News. It's title reads: “Texas Law Might Prevent Some Owners Of Beachfront Homes Destroyed By Ike From Rebuilding.”
The state legislature proposed the new law because it was tired of spending millions of tax dollars to restore beaches eroded by nature each year around houses built on the coastline. Limiting development near the shore would reduce costs to the state of storm damage, disaster response and erosion.
Do other states have similar laws in the books or being drafted by their legislatures? Let us know.

As if all of this isn't bad enough, there is more.
O'Reilly goes on and describes how Soros is an ideologue who "screams for the legalization of drugs, euthanasia, and "progressive" taxation.
Such a lovely worldview - isn't it? /sarcasm now off
After 9/11, Soros became much more radicalized. He spent $24 million trying to defeat Bush in 2004.

By the way, George Soros is on record as wanting affuent Americans to pay higher taxes, even as he operates a lucrative real estate company from Bermuda - another place where he can avoid U.S. taxes.
What kind of man is Soros? Well, he does not believe in God, his social phhilosophy is libertarian, and his political outlook is far, far left. According to investigative reporter Peter Schweizer, a fellow at the Hoover Institution, Soros has donated "hundreds of million of dollars" to American left-wing causes. At this point, he is the prime financier of a number of operations on the Internet that consistently smear conservative and traditional Americans.

To whom? Whom exactly is Soros pulling for? It isn't the United States, as he has compared the Bush administration to the Third Reich, according to an article written by Laura Blumenfeld in the Washington Post.
I ask you. Does all of this sound very familiar? Aren't these the talking points of the Obama campaign and all the far leftists in our country?

Soros expanded on his post-9/11 angst in an interview with Fortune magazine: "The crisis now is the crisis of global capitalism and a political and military crisis. It has been brought about by the exploitation of September 11th by the Bush administration to pursue its policy of dominate the world in the guise of fighting terrorism."
In no-spin words, Soros believes that the United States does not have the right to act unilaterally to fight terrorism, although, to be fair, he did not object to the removal of the Taliban in Afghanistan. A significant hallmark of the S-P movement, by the way, is that, with rare exceptions, a world consensus is needed in order to use military force. He had also urged his followers to kill all Jews. Rahman is serving a life sentence in a federal prison in Colorado.
Anyway, the sixty-six-year-old Stewart, who had openly advocated violence in the past, is now a convicted felon essentially for helping her pal Rahman. And guess who paid some of her legal bill: George Soros's Open Society Institute. Nice. One footnote: Both Soros and Stewart come from Jewish backgrounds, which is peculiar in light of their support for radical Islamists who want to re-create the Holocaust.
