2010 Year In Review ( Video, Slideshow)
Blue Sunset
We ended last year with one of our favorite photos of the decade: an extraterrestrial sunset photographed in 2005 by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit. We thought we'd end this year with another Martian sunset. This one was captured last month by Spirit's twin, Opportunity, in a series of photographs, which the rover science team combined and enhanced to create a seamless simulated descent. A bonus footage included in the embedded video above shows the moon Phobos passing in front of the sun.

New Years Eve Tornado's cause fatalities in Arkansas (blog)
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Tornadoes fueled by unusually warm air pummeled the South and Midwest on Friday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more across Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois. Forecasters said storms could hit along a stretch from near Chicago toNew Orleans later in the evening as New Year's Eve celebrations begin.
Three people died in the northwestern Arkansas hamlet of Cincinnati when a tornado touched down just before sunrise, and three others died when a storm spawned by the same weather system ripped up the Missouri countryside near Rolla. A number of storms were also reported in the St. Louis area.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said storms later Friday could do more damage from northern Illinois to the Gulf of Mexico as communities prepare to mark the start of the new year. Forecasters posted tornado watches for the region that were set to run until 8 p.m.
"It sucked me out of my house and carried me across the road and dropped me," Chris Sisemore of Cincinnati told The Associated Press on Friday. "I was Superman for a while. ... You're just free-floating through the air. Trees are knocking you and smacking you down."
Sisemore said he tried to crawl under his bed and cling to the carpet, fearful a nearby pecan tree would fall into his home. As he nursed cuts, scrapes and bruises to his arms, knees and back, he recalled opening his eyes as he flew because he didn't believe he'd see 2011.
"I wanted to see the end coming. You're only going to see it one time and I thought that was it," he said. "It takes more than a tornado to get me."
Several flights to and from the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport at Highfill were delayed or canceled Friday morning until crews could clear debris littering the runway.
The region has been bracing for severe weather for much of the week. Gulf moisture riding southerly winds pushed temperatures into the upper 60s and 70s on Thursday — ahead of a cold front expected to drop temperatures into the teens by Saturday morning.
"This storm system has been showing significant signs that it could develop," said Chris Buonanno, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in North Little Rock who was monitoring the storms as they moved deeper into Arkansas. "Conditions are favorable for seeing a severe outbreak.
"In the winter you don't always have the instability" that would allow tornadoes to develop, Buonanno said. "This time, we have the instability."
While the spring brings most of the region's tornadoes, violent weather at this time of year isn't unheard of. A February 2008 outbreak killed 31 in Tennessee and 14 in Arkansas, and in January 1999 two separate outbreaks across the South killed 18, including seven in Arkansas.
A year ago, there were no tornado deaths nationwide between Oct. 9, 2009, and March 10, 2010.
Buonanno said there appears to be some association between changes in South Pacific Ocean temperatures and changes in the flow of the jet stream in the central part of the United States, causing an uptick in violent weather.
Friday's tornado fatalities are the first in the nation since Sept. 16, when a woman hit a falling tree while driving in Queens, N.Y., and a man was killed in his home at Belleville, W.Va. The deaths push this year's count to 42 nationally, and to 5 in Arkansas. The deaths in Missouri were its first of the year.

TD Celebration that Cost Kansas State the Bowl game! (Blog, Video)
Syracuse 36, Kansas State 34. All things considered, Kansas State and Syracuse probably gave us the most entertaining game of a tepid bowl season this afternoon, across the board. The offenses combined for 70 points, 888 total yards and four second half lead changes. Syracuse running back Delone Carter and receiver Marcus Sales delivered career performances, racking up 371 yards and five touchdowns between them. Neither team turned the ball over. There were at least two hilarious moments involving officials, and at least one player suffered a minor injury while over-enthusiastically celebrating a minor success.
[Related: Wild ending to college bowl game]
In the end, Syracuse left the stadium with its eighth victory of the season, doubling the Orange's best effort in the win column since 2004. (That would be Yankee Stadium, by the way, hosting its first postseason game since 1962, on the heels of a blizzard.) All of which was immediately overshadowed on Kansas State receiver Adrian Hilburn's 30-yard touchdown reception to bring the Wildcats within a two-point conversion of tying the game with 1:24 on the clock, when Hilburn's post-touchdown salute was met with the most dubious flag of the postseason, at least:
The touchdown stood, but instead of attempting a two-point conversion to tie from the Syracuse three-yard line, the Wildcats were forced into a longshot heave from the 'Cuse 18 and, when that (predictably) failed, a desperation onside kick. That failed, too, allowing Syracuse to run the clock out on its biggest win in nearly a decade.
Is it the worst call of the year? In technical terms, probably not, since it can be conceivably justified by the rule book as a player drawing attention to himself. (The Wildcats might get a "clarification" from the bowl or the Big Ten, which supplied the crew for the game, but almost certainly not the mea culpa the SEC issued last year after a bogus celebration call against Georgia.) In practical terms, coming against a senior who didn't taunt his opponent, throw the ball into the crowd or break into any sort of elaborate dance after taking in his second career touchdown in the most crucial moment of probably the biggest stage of his life, it has to be up there. And for its immediate impact on the outcome, I'm inclined to give it the title.
[Related: NFL player's 'respectful' f-bomb]
In the meantime, Syracuse fans should enjoy the victory, unless they're the type of fan who responds to this sort of thing by saying "act like you've been there before," in which case I imagine they find it difficult to enjoy anything. But even the over-legislated "No Fun League" thinks the guy who threw that flag is a self-important killjoy. Let 'em play, and occasionally salute.
[Update, 8:26 a.m. ET, 12/31] If you started listing the counter-examples of similar salutes (and worse) that aren't flagged – beginning with Tennessee's repeated post-touchdown salutes in Thursday night's Music City Bowl loss to North Carolina, another controversial finish overseen by Big Ten officials – you'd never stop. But Hilburn didn't even have to think outside of this game to call out the inconsistency:
"I really don't agree with the call. My teammates are backing me on the call," a distraught Hilburn said afterward. "I saw our opponent throw up diamond signs after they score a touchdown and now I give a salute? What's that? Respecting our soldiers? It hurts."I know we're kind of on their turf and I shouldn't have done it but I still don't think that was a good call."
I'm not sure I believe that "our soldiers" were anywhere in Hilburn's mind during the touchdown, but the guy has a point: If you're going to nitpick, at least be consistent enough about it that players know what to expect.

In 2011: We're to be strong...in the power of His might.
For several years now I have been a subscriber to Dr. David Jeremiah's free Turning Point magazine devotional and a supporter of his excellent ministry. I love the fact that I get the devotional weeks before the next month begins.
In the new January 2011 issue, there is an article that I think is one of the best ever written! I tried to find it online, but the website only has one of the articles published there today.
It would have been so much easier to copy and paste it here. But I will consider it a "labor of love" to type out sections of it so that readers here will get to enjoy it today.
The new devotional is entitled, "Unclaimed Possibilities." Before I share sections of the article, "Claiming the Power," I want to share the last few paragraphs of the last article in the booklet, "Claiming the Message."
In this essay, Dr. Jeremiah stresses that the Bible's message is the same as it has always been. It is good to know that the opportunities may increase and the methods used by Turning Point may change, but THE MESSAGE OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST never will!
Sadly, I have seen some churches loose the importance of that statement. They become so worldly focused that they are no longer heavenly focused! I like how Dr. Jeremiah puts it:
I wholeheartedly agree! When I witnessed two churches drifting away from the original purposes for their existence, it was truly sad to see. I could no longer support such ministries. It breaks my heart to admit that, but it is true.
I feel confident in supporting Turning Point Ministries because I have the assurance that the message being shared is committed towards Bible truth and the Christ-centered gospel.

People, it has been my prayer and hope that this little ole' Talk Wisdom blog has been even just a bit of a blessing to each of you. When I first started this blog, it was a little scary. But I soon found out (back in 2004) that I might just be talking to myself! You see, I didn't have ANY comments for weeks! Then, one day a reader posted the first comment.
Over several years I have "learned the ropes" of blogging. I found numerous blogs - many of which were so much more sophisticated than mine - and tried some of the methods that they were utilizing. But still, I didn't have any idea how many people were visiting this blog until I got my counter. Over the past few weeks, there have been hundreds of hits here just using the search phrase, "true meaning of Christmas." How delightful it was to know that in December of 2010, people are genuinely seeking the TRUE MEANING of Christmas - and coming here to read about it!
It is my desire to share more of the essay, "Claiming The Power" in my next blog post. For now, I will share the most important part:

Excerpt:
I want to assure you with all the power of my convictions that however quickly our opportunities may increase and our methods may change here at Turning Point, our message never will. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. God is immutable and imperishable. His Book is infallible and inerrant. The human heart is as sinful as ever, but the blood of Christ will never lose its power to redeem and save lost souls. Heaven and hell are real, and Christ is coming soon. We have a message to preach, a Gospel to share, and millions of lives to encourage.
Sometimes innovation is necessary or else our ministries become museums and then mausoleums. [Note from Christine: I know EXACTLY what he means! I've seen some museum-like churches teetering towards the mausoleum phase!] But when that change weakens the message, the result is a graveyard for evangelism. The historic motto of Youth for Christ was: "Anchored to the Rock...Geared to the Times." It doesn't do any good to be geared to the times if your message slides off the rock. The best packaging in the world won't compensate for faulty content. Technological innovations are worthless without an abiding message to communicate. Timely methods deserve a timeless Gospel for the human heart.,
Our Lord Jesus used every means at His disposal to share His message. He preached and used object lessons like birds, flowers, coins, and even the children He lifted in His arms and sat in His midst. He performed signs and wonders, stilled storms, and turned water into wine. He wasn't showing off. He was using object lessons as only He could use them. On one occasion, He stooped and wrote in the dirt with His finger.
According to Acts 1:1, the Gospel is the account of "all that Jesus began both to do and teach." The 2000-year history of the church is the story of all that Jesus is continuing to do and to teach, using every worthwhile means a His disposal through His people and His church.
I'm not willing to let the devil have full use of all of today's technologies. Why yield an inch to him? Why not claim some unclaimed resources and reclaim the message for Christ? Nationally and internationally, we're committed to exploit every fresh opportunity and get the changeless message of our Lord before more people than ever before in our history.

It is my desire to share more of the essay, "Claiming The Power" in my next blog post. For now, I will share the most important part:
Psalm 62:11 says, "power belongs to God." According to Psalm 65:6, God is "clothed with power." Jeremiah 10:12 says that God "made the earth by His power." Psalm 66:7 says that He "rules by His power forever."
Luke tells us that Jesus went about His ministry "in the power of the Spirit" (Luke 4:14; Acts 10:38), and people were amazed at His "authority and power" (Luke 4:36). He had power on earth to forgive sins (Luke 5:24), to heal illness (Luke 6:19), to still storms and alter weather patterns (Mark 4:39). He said that all power had been given to Him in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). He is declared to be the Son of God with power by His resurrection from the dead (Romans 1:4). And when He comes again, it will be in "power and great glory" (Matthew 24:30).
We can only live for Him effectively when we tap into the infinite source of His power. We're to be strong...in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10).

Gary Shirley Told Girlfriend to Cover Up ‘Teen Mom’ Amber Hitting Him Again
See that face? That’s why you always wear a condom. Even if you’re married.
Earlier in the month it was reported that Teen Mom Amber Portwood decided it’d be a smart idea to assault Gary Shirley again while she’s currently facing felony charges for beating him in front of an entire MTV audience and more importantly their infant daughter. Turns out the incident really did happen because TMZ has obtained audio of Gary telling his girlfriend Ashley to lie about the incident. Also, we can assume she took that as “Sell me talking to you right now to TMZ” because that’s entirely what just happened:
The audio — recorded Dec. 15 — captures “Teen Mom” co-star Gary on the phone with a girlfriend named Ashley. He’s telling her how to stonewall reporters who got wind of a Dec. 14 incident where Amber allegedly beat him again.
Gary advises Ashley to tell reporters, “No comment, no comment, no comment …” adding, “every time they leave you alone.”
During the call, Gary admits, Amber “f**king hit me.” You also hear Gary whisper to a friend in the room that Ashley didn’t actually see Amber hit him — she was outside waiting in a car.
In return for Ashley’s silence … Gary makes this gallant offer to her — “Maybe one day we can start a family.”
You gotta love the balls on this guy. Not only is he an epic fatass ensnared in the most publicized Jerry Springer-esque custody battle of the month, but he basically promises to knock another chick up if she looks the other way while his ex beats the shit out of him. I don’t know how you resist that. If I had a vagina right now, I could wring it out and fill up a mop bucket. That’s how seductive that offer is.
BEST OF 2010 : Lady GaGa’s Missing Penis !
During simpler, more innocent times, there existed a rumor that Lady GaGa was born a hermaphrodite and therefore had both male and female genitalia. Cut to the 2010 Brit Awards where her stage outfit revealed almost entirely hatchet wound and not a single trace of man-wiener. None of you believed your eyes, so you clicked these photos millions of times in what I can only assume was a frantic effort to make a penis appear. “Honey, just leave dinner on the stove. I’m not sleeping until I find that cock.
Chris Brown Doesn’t Like People Mentioning That Time He Banged a Dude
Last week Chris Brown posted to Twitter his diploma for passing a court-ordered anger management course to silence the “haters,” and show he’s a man who’s clearly learned from his mistakes. Cut to last night where he flew off the handle on Twitter when Raz B of the boy band B2K decided to make a comment about Chris Brown disrespecting Rihanna, and also one about his secret gay lover – more on that later. As some background, Raz B was molested by his manager which apparently Chris Brown was aware of and applied his new sensitivity to the situation:
- Tell me this @razb2k!! Why when the money was coming in u won’t complaining about getting butplugged! #homothug!!!
- @razb2k… you didn’t get raped??? so that means you liked it… #EPICFAIL
- I ain’t deleting my tweet either!! I was minding my damn business and Peter pan decides to pop off!!! #whatalame
- I’m not mad though!!! I’m just not silent nor am i one of these scary R&B cats!!
- I’m not homophobic! He’s just disrespectful!!!
- @razb2k when I need tips on how to demolish my career I’ll call ya!!!!!
- @razb2k it’s funny how I’m nominated for 3 grAmmys off of a mixtape and ur scrambling for change!!
- @razb2k ur a x backup singer!!!!! What do u make? Like $1.99 an hour
- @razb2k when you fart it whistle #walnutbandit
- This argument lasted longer than your career @razb2k
Chris Brown has since deleted some of these, but fortunately I took some screencaps last night because I have no life. In the meantime, he posted the following message and wants to let his gay fans know he’s not a homophobe:
BTW… i love all my gay fans and this immature act is not targeted at you!!!! love
Of course, that’s hilarious because let’s get into what really pissed Chris Brown off: The dude he used to have sex with. Apparently back in September, H8TERADE BLOG reported that former friend/back-up dancer Andre Merritt came forward and revealed that not only did him and Chris Brown have sex – just to get off, nothing romantic – but he was the one who texted Chris the night he beat Rihanna into a car door. If this is all true, that would mean Rihanna not only knows Chris Brown bang dudes, she ain’t no snitch even after getting her face beat in. So God willing, someone will smack some sense into her. — Poor choice of words. Anyway, here’s a video Andre posted to YouTube, so I’ll let you guys decide if this is true or the bullshit ramblings of a “walnut bandit,” which I’m now going to call everyone I meet. All this time I was using “pecan hooligan.”

Obama Team's Dysfunction Prompted Lack Of Focus On Jobs; Bill Clinton Annoyed At White House !
Some revelations about the Obama administration detailed in the new epilogue to the upcoming paperback release of Jonathan Alter's bestseller, "The Promise," probably won't please too many folks at the White House. Alter claims that a dysfunctional relationship between top White House aides hurt the administration's policy on job creation, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was almost dropped from financial reform legislation and was only reinstated after complaints by Elizabeth Warren, and Bill Clinton continually grumbles about being disrespected by the administration.
The Obama administration's perceived failure to take laser-like aim at the unemployment crisis was partly due to the dysfunctional relationship between White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, top economic adviser Larry Summers and senior adviser David Axelrod, specifically the intransigence of Summers, according to Alter:
Tough media coverage continued to annoy the administration. When the New York Times reported in August that BP was rising to the challenge of cleaning up the oil spill but hardly noted the administration's role, Obama snapped, "I'm getting pounded for not pushing BP hard enough and now they turn around and say BP did an acceptable job in spite of Obama. We can't win."
Alter details Obama's poisonous relationship with Congressional Republican leaders John Boehner and Mitch McConnell -- though the president talked to John McCain in spite of his 2008 rival's anti-Obama rhetoric, he refused for months to meet one-on-one with McConnell, because he thought it was unfair to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. After a frustrating mid-summer meeting with Republican leadership at the White House, Obama expressed his annoyance at Boehner's insistence on extending tax cuts for the wealthy despite the budget deficit.
The president told friends: "All I want for Christmas is an opposition I can negotiate with."
The White House has not yet responded to a late-afternoon request for comment.
Stanford ends UConn women's winning streak at 90 !
Jeanette Pohlen scores a career-high 31 points to lead the Cardinal to a 71-59 victory over the Huskies.
The Huskies never led and were beaten by No. 9 Stanford, 71-59, on Thursday night, ending a remarkable run that drew national attention and acclaim to women's basketball.
Stanford was the last school to beat Coach Geno Auriemma's team, in the 2008 NCAA semifinals.
Jeanette Pohlen hit five 3-pointers on the way to a career-high 31 points and the Cardinal (9-2) had the Huskies' number at last -- a huge number at that. Stanford won its 52nd straight at Maples Pavilion in a rematch of last season's NCAA title game won 53-47 by two-time defending national champion UConn.
Last week, the Huskies (12-1) topped the 88-game winning streak set by John Wooden's UCLA men's team from 1971-74 by beating No. 22 Florida State 93-62, then won their 90th in a row this week at Pacific.
Huskies star Maya Moore was held to 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting. UConn hadn't lost since an 82-73 defeat to Stanford on April 6, 2008, in the Final Four at Tampa, Fla.
Pohlen sealed it with six free throws in the final 42.5 seconds. She shot 8-for-15 overall and had nine rebounds and six assists. Nnemkadi Ogwumike added 12 points and six rebounds and Kayla Pedersen 11 rebounds for an inspired Stanford squad that held a 43-36 advantage on the boards.
Moore's 3-pointer with 10:50 left cut Stanford's lead to 48-44, then Pedersen answered moments later on the other end. Moore tried to will her team back late, scoring eight straight during one stretch. But she missed the front end of a one-and-one off the rim with 1:42 left that could have made it a four-point game.
Kelly Faris scored 19 points and Bria Hartley 14 for the Huskies, who never found their usual dominant form while playing in front of a raucous sellout crowd of 7,329-plus for this highly anticipated, nationally televised showdown between the top programs from either coast.
UConn was headed home from the Bay Area on what certainly would be an extra-long redeye flight out of San Francisco. The team just beat the big East Coast blizzard to get here, leaving at 6:30 a.m. Sunday. UConn played at Maples for the first time since Dec. 28, 1993, and Stanford has won all three meetings in the rivalry on its home floor.
For the Cardinal, this was a long time coming. Coach Tara VanDerveer, who joined the elite 800-win club last week, thought about that championship loss for months and felt her team missed a big opportunity, saying it fueled her to be a better coach and did the same for her players. Stanford hasn't won it all since 1992 despite making the last three Final Fours.
Stanford led at halftime for the third straight time facing UConn, having blown a 20-12 edge at the break in the title game last April.
Moore missed her initial four shots and didn't score her first points until knocking down a 3 at with 3:14 left in the opening half. The two-time national player of the year came in averaging 24.8 points and received a rousing ovation from the Stanford crowd when starting lineups were introduced, though Auriemma was booed.
Why Leach is a good idea for Maryland.
(But why they're going to struggle for a bit after hiring him)
Apparently, the Mike Leach/Maryland courtship is progressing well. This is good news if you're a Terp fan. Because Maryland and Texas Tech have a lot in common.
1. Prior to Leach, both teams played somewhere around .500 ball. Ralph Freigan was a successful (and popular) coach, as was Spike Dykes.
2. Both teams, recently (prior to Leach) found themselves in conferences where they have trouble competing against the big dogs. For Tech it was aTm, OU and UT-Austin, for Maryland it's VaTech, Miami and Fl State.
3. Both teams can get second tear athletes, but have difficulty consistently getting top tier athletes. Leach has shown the ability to excel with the 2nd tier, and he can coach them up (on offense) to the 1st tier.
4. The ACC can be had right now. As could the Big XII as they weakened over time.
All that said, expect Maryland to suffer for a couple of years. Why?
The curse of firing a coach on the heels of an 8-win season.
Don't worry though Terps fans. Fear the turtle will be very real in about three years. It will just be lean for the next two.

DIDDY SPENDS TIME WITH HIS LADIES IN ST. BARTS!!
Kim Porter is still lapping up the luxury aboard her babies' daddy Sean Combs' rented 100-foot yacht in St. Barts. The twosome were spotted getting a bit lovey-dovey while pulling into Grande Saline Beach for a day of fun in the sun with their twins Jessie and D'Lila.
They've been sailing around the French coast for days. And it aint no stoppin' to their uber luxe yacht getaway.
Kim was spotted grabbing Diddy arm to hold hands as she rocked this hot white bikini and cute gold head piece.
The two seemed to be getting along fine until, as the paps snapping the pics report, things went "cold" very quickly.
Kim showed off her post-4 kids bangin' bikini bod...
Yes, we said FOUR kids.
Diddy worked a bit while taking in the sights.
And then brought his little girls Jessie James and D'Lila Star and their nanny and friends to the beach via a small dingy.
And a few days earlier...
The twins are growing up so fast. Looks like they were having some fun with their Barbie dolls.
Kim donned a cute short jumpsuit while chillin' out. AND donned a diamond rock on her ring finger. Just an accessory?
Must be nice...
SMH: 1 OF TYLER PERRY'S BURGLARS CAUGHT!!
Chloe Ware was arrested for breaking into Hollywood star Tyler Perry home. According to police Chloe Ware and two other people were caught on surveillance cameras breaking into Tyler Perry residence and his bodyguards were able to apprehend Chloe but the other two were able to escape. Chloe Ware has been charged with prowling and criminal trespass.
Tyler later took to his blog and went off about the incident saying:
"What happened to making your own way? What happened to honesty and integrity? What happened to doing the right thing so that God can bless you? Man, this made me upset!"
"I will give 'till I can't give anymore. That's my heart. But to try and rob, or steal from me! If all three of them were looking for trouble, they found it!" he wrote.
Tell 'em why you mad, Tyler.
