It is believed that the elusive ULFA chief was injured in the crackdown which Myanmar’s Army has launched against Indian insurgents.
"Baruah, 55, has sustained bullet injuries during a counter-insurgency operation in Myanmar," a leading daily quoted a source from the Assam Police as saying. It added the Union Home Ministry confirmed the attack but said he "survived".
Myanmar security forces had about a week ago launched a major offensive against Indian militants, especially the NSCN-Khaplang (National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Khaplang), in the Naga Hills along the China border.
The crackdown comes ahead of Myanmar's Interior Minister Delhi visit next month.
ULFA, along with Naga and Manipuri militants, has a number of camps along the Myanmar-China border.
