Turkish plane skids off Mumbai airport runway

A Turkish plane with 97 passengers and crew on board skidded off the runway at the Mumbai Airport early Friday. There were, however, no injuries to anyone on the aircraft.

All the passengers and crew on board are safe, an official said.

"The Turkish Airways flight TK-720 was arriving from Istanbul to Mumbai. Soon after landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, it skidded off the rapid exit taxiway N8 and got stuck in the mud there," the official told.

The incident happened after the scheduled flight landed around 4.13 am on Friday, according to the official.

All flight operations have been moved to secondary runway. The average delay in arrival is 15 minutes and departure 30 minutes. Due to rains, visibility fell below the required minima, so Mumbai airport was closed for flights from 08.40am to 08.52am.

As a result of the incident, the main runway has been closed for operations since the past nearly four hours till the aircraft is removed.

Efforts are currently underway to remove the aircraft and clear the runway for normal operations, the official added.
