Owner Comes Out to Car Frozen in Ice!? (Blog, Pics)

A Manhattan water main leak over the weekend, combined with freezing temperatures, left a parked car frozen under a hard casing of ice and caused part of the street to cave in.

The hole in the pavement near East 2nd Avenue continues to grow, while one unlucky Audi A3 owner tries to figure out what to do next.

The leaky pipe has created thick, overlapping layers that are blanketing East Second Street between First and Second Avenues.

The owner of the car, identified by 1010Wins as Pete, said he left his car parked on Friday night and that at some point during the weekend the leak began -- slowly turning his vehicle into an ice sculpture.

Many commuters braving the biting, 19 degree weather Monday, paused their commute to gather around and take picture of the cover blanketed by six inches of ice.

The New York Department of Environmental Protection shut off water to the surrounding residences mid-morning to begin fixing the pipe.
