Michael Phelps came up short in more than one way Tuesday at the Swimming World Championships.
Not only did the 14-time Olympic champion suffer a tough loss to teammate Ryan Lochte in the 200-meter freestyle, Phelps also apparently forgot his swim trunks, according to multiple reports.
Shortly before Tuesday’s loss, Phelps realized he had forgotten his warm-up trunks and had to borrow a pair from Australia’s Eamon Sullivan, according to the reports.
"Had to loan forgetful @MichaelPhelps my training togs for his warm up tonight. Hope they bring good luck buddy... PS - you can keep them!" Sullivan reportedly wrote on Twitter about an hour before the 200-meter freestyle final.
Phelps’ week at the Swimming World Championships has been anything but smooth. Before Tuesday’s loss, he and the US were stunned in the 400-meter freestyle relay, finishing third.
The Americans' 1-2 finish in the 200 free Tuesday kicked off a big night for the United States. Rebecca Soni led all the way in winning the 100 breaststroke by 1.20 seconds, Kate Ziegler earned silver in the 1,500 freestyle and Natalie Coughlin took bronze in the 100 backstroke, giving the Americans nine medals through the first three days of swimming.
