MTV Video Music Awards 2011: A VMA Preview (BLOG)

The age of 27 is when many good things die in rock and roll–Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, and, most recently, the sublime singer Amy Winehouse.
The MTV Video Music Awards marks its 27th year this time around. Can it beat the curse and stay vital?
First things first: There is no host this year. The network opted to go sans host in 2004 and 2007 as well. During those presentations celebrities and musicians both presented awards and introduced musical acts.
Which brings us to performances. Lady Gaga (who showed up in the infamous meat dress last year) will open the event. Beyoncé, Pitbull & Jessie J, Adele, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Young The Giant, (who will mark their first VMA performance) are also slated to take the stage.
But who will take home a silver moonman or two?
Katy Perry is nominated for nine VMAs, Adele (who will be performing for the first time on the awards show) is up for seven, Kayne West (who snatched the microphone from Taylor Swift during the 2009 awards, causing an uproar) is looking at six and Hawaiian-born Bruno Mars is nominated for four.
A teaser trailer for the highly anticipated film, “The Hunger Games” is slated to premiere during the show with an introduction by Jennifer Lawrence, the film’s lead actress.
Below is the complete list of nominee’s and be sure to tune into as we will be live blogging the event starting at 8 p.m. this Sunday.
