CBI arrests Karnataka's Reddy brothers

In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested former Karnataka tourism minister and mining czar G Janardhana Reddy and his brother Srinivasa Reddy after conducting raids at their residence and offices in connection with their illegal mining business.

A ten-member team of the CBI conducted the raids and seized computer hard disk and vital documents related to Reddy brother’s illegal mining operations in and outside Karnataka.

The two Reddy brothers are being taken to Hyderabad for questioning following their arrest by the central probe agency. They have been detained under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI, which started its inquiry into the illegal mining operations by the Reddy brothers in 2009, raided their residence at around midnight.

The CBI team also raided the Obulapuram Mining Corporation office of Srinivasa Reddy.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear, whether Karunakar Reddy, third brother of Janardhana and Srinivasa has also been arrested by the CBI.

The probe agency action comes a day after Reddy's associate and former Karnataka minister B Sreeramulu resigned from his Assembly seat, protesting against the BJP's denial to give him ministerial berth and also keeping Bellary Reddy brothers out of the ministry.

The are allegations of irregularities in the mining activities of OMC which is owned by the brothers – G Karunakara Reddy, G Janardhana Reddy, G Somashekara Reddy.

The Reddy brothers have been indicted by former Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hedge in his crucial report on illegal mining.

The Reddy brothers’ arrest is likely to unleash a political storm in the southern state in view of their proximity to the ruling BJP.
