Rappers Respond To Actress Ashley Judd's Rant Against Rap

In her memoir, All That Is Bitter & Sweet, actress Ashley Judd slammed Rap music and referred to it as “the contemporary soundtrack of misogyny.” Specifically targeting Youth AIDS’ decision to use Snoop Dogg and Diddy in their TV and radio campaigns to reach the youth, Judd even went on to say that Hip-Hop music has a “rape culture.”

“As far as I’m concerned, most rap and Hip-Hop music -- with its rape culture and insanely abusive lyrics and depictions of girls and women as ‘ho’s’ -- is the contemporary soundtrack of misogyny,” wrote the actress.

Roots drummer Questlove responded to the words via his Twitter account, writing, “Hmmm. At least I got my answer as to why [Ashley Judd] didn’t give us so much as a nod on her last visit. I’m a criminal.”

Adding, “Every genre of music has elements of violence. It speaks more volumes that in Rap only a certain side gets promoted.”

Producer 9th Wonder also responded on the social media network, tweeting, “It is proof positive that racism in some form or fashion still exists in dealing with Ashley Judd’s comments. Ashley Judd has basically called all of us criminals and savages in one fail swoop.”

“I’d rather Ash Judd just called me a n*gger,” he continued. “…that would of cut to the chase.”

Judd later released a statement apologizing for her words though and said that she wasn’t trying to offend anyone.

“I am deeply remorseful that anything I may have said in All That Is Bitter & Sweet would hurt adherents of genres that represent their culture,” she wrote. “Crucial words are missing that could have made a giant difference.”
