Did 50 Cent Keep Jeremih From Being Dropped By Def Jam?

During a recent interview, 50 Cent revealed that Def Jam was prepared to drop Jeremih after the numbers for the singer’s sophomore effort paled in comparison to his debut. But, the G-Unit leader quickly stepped in and offered his support to the Birthday Sex crooner and helped him land a single on the Billboard charts to save his career.

“They was counting Jeremih out completely. He was already gon’ be dropped from Def Jam before [Down On Me],” said Fif while talking to Angie Martinez on Hot 97. “He was definitely gonna be in a position where he was getting dropped because the first week sales was really low on the record.”

Recounting how their hit single Down On Me came together, Fif says he agreed to work with Jeremih off of the strength of his singing ability.

“We did the song, I didn’t care. I was just looking at him as an artist and I said he sounds good, and I thought he was a dope artist, so I said I’ma do it,” he recalled. “And we did the song, and then it took off. It’s been number one for what, five weeks now?”

Even if Def Jam hadn’t worked out for Jeremih, rumors suggest that 50 may have tried to bring the singer over to his new label, G-Note Records, which is already home to rapper Hot Rod and singer Governor.
