Chamillionaire Drops Universal, Not Releasing 'Venom' (Blog)


After six years with Universal RecordsChamillionaire has officially split with the record label and will no longer drop his long-awaited third solo album, Venom.

In an interview with Billboard.comon Thursday (January 13), TheRidin Dirty rapper discusses his grievances with his former label and their relationship. According to the rapper, Universal wanted him to release records like his biggest hit to this date, Ridin Dirty and make him more “Pop”.

Chamillionaire stated, “’You infiltrated Pop culture with Ridin Dirty, now do it again.’ That's what they wanted me to be, and if I came in with something that was more me, they wouldn't support. But Ridin Dirty wasn't a Pop record -- it was myself.”

He also disclosed to Billboard that he came to a point where he made a conscious decision not to compromise his vision and quality for his music. Unfortunately, it meant not releasing any more music under the label.

Cham added, “I knew if I did that I had a better chance of getting off [the label], I was fighting against this company and it was just an abusive relationship. It wasn't beneficial for either of us.”

After his interview, he hosted two Ustream sessions on Friday night (January 14) and let his fans know that his departure from Universal would not permit him to release Venom. Although he did not discuss all of his plans for the future,Chamillionaire did disclose that he would take the independent route and incorporate his own innovate ways to generate income for himself.
